Which fuel efficiency unit is most common globally?
L/100 km is the most widely used standard, adopted across the EU, Canada, Australia, and China. MPG dominates in the US and UK, while km/L is preferred in Japan, India, and parts of South America.
Can I convert between efficiency and consumption units?
Yes. MPG and km/L are efficiency units (higher is better). L/100 km is a consumption unit (lower is better). Convert using: L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ MPG or L/100 km = 100 ÷ km/L.
Why do electric vehicles use different units?
EVs use kWh/100 km or miles per kWh equivalent (MPGe) because they consume electricity, not liquid fuel. The EPA assigns an MPGe rating where 33.7 kWh equals one gallon of gasoline energy.
